The Oldest Family Business In England, Est 1535

In 1535 John Balson began trading meat at the Bridport market and the Balson family have been trading in Butchery ever since.  This makes them the oldest, continuous family business in England.

Just think, Henry VIII was king when the Balson family business began.  The current shop's location is practically brand new, well since 1880.

R.J. Balson and Son are famous for their sausages.   We bought some traditional Bangers but there are lots of exotic choices as well.....

like Kangaroo Sausages!  British butchers are a cheerful lot.  I've never met one who wasn't charming, chatty, and funny.  Just look at the sign on Balson's bike.

The next time you are in Bridport, stop by R.J. Balson and Son and see what's on offer.

You won't find a more experienced butcher anywhere in England!

    1. I am 99 per cent vegetarian, too. But I had to visit the oldest family business and see what it was like. The idea that this family had been doing this continuously since Tudor times intrigued me.
